🎣 May 17, 2026: Tough Sea Bass Bite, but Ling Fills the Box!
Today’s trip was a carbon copy of yesterday: absolutely beautiful, calm, blue ocean conditions out there. While the weather on top was perfect, the water temperatures down at the bottom are still holding on to that early-spring chill.
That cold bottom water makes the Sea Bass sluggish. When the water is chilly, their metabolism slows down, and they lose their appetite. We bounced around to several different depths today to test the waters and look for a warmer pocket, but the fish just weren't ready to cooperate fully yet. The ocean simply needs a little more time to warm up before that aggressive, fast-paced Sea Bass bite we all love really kicks into high gear.
We switched gears and targeted Ling to make sure our anglers filled the cooler. We also caught and released some hard-fighting Blackfish, short Sea Bass, and even some short Fluke. There is plenty of life out there, the summer fish are just waiting for that temperature dial to turn up.

The warm-up is coming, and when it hits, the fishing is going to explode. The transition from May into June is historically one of the absolute best times of the year as hungry fish wake up and look for a meal.
